Discovering Raku: Art and Philosophy

Raku is a ceramic firing technique originating from Japan, deeply rooted in Zen philosophy. It is particularly valued for its unpredictable process and unique results. Invented in the 16th century, this method was used to create tea bowls for the Japanese tea ceremony.

Creative Process

Raku stands out for its fast firing process. The pieces are first shaped and bisque fired at low temperature. Next, they are glazed and fired rapidly to a temperature of around 950-1050°C. The magic of Raku lies in the post-firing reduction phase: the incandescent pieces are removed from the kiln and placed into combustible materials such as wood shavings or straw. This step causes thermal shocks and chemical reactions that create unique crackle and metallic effects on the ceramic surface.

Philosophy and Aesthetics

Raku is more than just a pottery technique; it is a philosophy. It embodies imperfection, asymmetry, and spontaneity—core concepts of Wabi-Sabi, which celebrates the beauty of impermanence and the incomplete. Each Raku piece is unique, marked by the unexpected and by imperfections that make it precious.

Raku in the West

Introduced to the West in the 20th century, Raku has captivated many ceramic artists and pottery enthusiasts with its experimental approach and dramatic results. Today, it is taught in many ceramic studios around the world, including the Galeart Workshop, where you can explore this fascinating technique during our dedicated courses.
